To get what you want in life learn to sell. Now most people don’t like it when I tell what to do. So let me say it differently. It’s your choice - sell yourself or continually be frustrated with you lack of progress.
Most people do not know how to sell. Matter of fact most sales professionals don’t know how to sell because they never learned. They just watched other ineffective sales people and figured that's what you do. What happens then is they don’t even want to think of themselves as sales people because what they saw was pushy, cajoling, manipulative, lying, low lifes. You’ll rarely see a sales person’s business card say sales person. Fortunately that is not what selling is, as the successful ones will tell you.
To be effective in your career and life here is what to do. Become people focused. That is, network to the right people – those with power. The magic is to find-out what they want without bragging about yourself or your stuff. Once you know their deepest desires, you can then fit yourself to them. It’s that easy. However, somewhere along the line people stick themselves with low-levels and push how great they are. If you don’t believe me, listen to the next message you leave on a voice mail. Take note also of the position of the person where you’re leaving that message.
So when someone (or that little voice inside you) says, “Get out there and sell yourself.” What will you do? Who will you emulate – the contriving, lying, self centered, sales people you’ve seen? It’s scary, but real.
