I keep talking about determining what someone wants before telling them what you think they should have. I hoping sales people will listen. But now I realize that what they are doing is good, but they fire before they aim.
So if you want your professional selling life to be better, ask and explore with your your boss and associates what they want.
If you want to be happy in your home life, give your significant-other and your children what they want, not what you think they should have. Now I’m not suggesting diamonds or sports cars for the spouse and drugs for the kids. What I am suggesting is hear them out before prescribing.
I’m on the phone yesterday with a my customer service person trying to learn about an e-commerce merchant account. I thought I had one, but I found out I just have a MOTA - who knew. Anyhow, I need one that has a gateway that’s compatible with my shopping cart and I haven’t a clue what I’m talking about. Well, I sort of say the two sentences above and the guy is telling me the merits of his system, yah da, yah da, yah da. I finally said, “Time-Out. You don’t even know why I called.”
When I tell that to someone, they get real defensive and then annoyed with me. However, I called wanting something and this person wants to tell me what he thinks I want the answer to. Now this may sound like something you’d never do, but believe me you do and you don’t even realize it.
